Born in Paris, Bertrand de Billy debuted as an orchestral musician before continuing as music director. From 1993 to 1995 he was first Kapellmeister and deputy GMD at the Anhalt Theatre in Dessau, and from 1996 to 1998 he held the same position at the Vienna Volksoper. He was then principal conductor of the Gran Teatro del Liceu in Barcelona from 1999 to 2004, and from 2002 to 2010 principal conductor of the Vienna Radio Symphony Orchestra and principal guest conductor of the Frankfurt Opera until 2015. He was from 2013 to 2016 principal guest conductor of the Orchestre de Chambre de Lausanne and, more recently, principal guest conductor of the Dresden Philharmonic.Bertrand de Billy is regularly invited to the leading opera stages, including Metropolitan Opera New York, Paris Opera, Staatsoper Vienna, Royal Opera House Covent Garden, Bayerische Staatsoper Munich and La Monnaie Brussels. He performed worldwide with orchestras such as Cleveland Orchestra, London Philharmonic, Vienna Philharmonic, and Orchestre national de France.His wide repertoire ranges from Bach to numerous world premiers. In recent seasons, he conducted, among others, The Magic Flute, La Bohème, Manon, Dialogues des carmélites, Otello, Faust, Die Fledermaus, Der fliegende Holländer, Carmen, Don Carlos and Don Giovanni.The 2023/24 season sees him conduct Dialogues des carmélites, Tosca, Guillaume Tell, Don Giovanni and Faust at Staatsoper Vienna. He also returns to Staatsoper Unter den Linden Berlin for Macbeth and will conduct Hamlet in concert version at the 2024 Salzburg Festival.Numerous CD and DVD recordings feature his artistic work. Bertrand de Billy has received numerous awards in France and Austria.
