The title of La Clemenza di Tito says it all: the emperor of Rome, although betrayed by his friend who has attempted to kill him for the love of a woman, will choose to pardon the conspirators. Themes of imperial mercy were standard fare for operas, especially when written on royal commission. This is precisely the case with this work, composed in just eighteen days by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart for Prague in 1791, on the occasion of the coronation of Leopold II, alongside The Magic Flute and the Requiem. Despite a libretto by the poet Metastasio that had been set many times by other composers, and a musical form – opera seria – already considered outdated, Mozart’s subtle and delicate music lays bare the truth of the characters’ emotions. In Willy Decker’s stylised staging, a marble block at the centre of the stage gradually reveals the emperor’s hidden face: that of a solitary, wounded man.

Behind the comic plot of La Finta giardiniera lies a subtle portrait of human passions. Sandrina, a Marchioness disguised as a gardener, is seeking to escape her tumultuous past: she was stabbed by her lover, Count Belfiore, and left for dead. Reunited in the local judge’s mansion, the former lovers find themselves embroiled in a series of quiproquos and disguises, before everything is unravelled in a happy reconciliation. In 1775, aged just eighteen, Mozart composed La Finta giardiniera for the Munich Carnival. The young composer skilfully blends recitative, arias and ensembles, already revealing the humour and humanity that would characterise his future masterpieces. This opera is performed by the Paris Opera Academy’s artists in residence in Julie Delille’s new staging.

The Marriage of Figaro is one of the repertoire’s most iconic works. Brahms spoke of it as a “miracle” and the Countess’s lament remains one of the most heart-rending musical pages of all time. By taking up Beaumarchais’ comedy, which had caused a scandal to shake Parisian society, Mozart and Da Ponte’s success was secured. The play had even been banned by Joseph II in 1785 at Theatre of Vienna. Did it shine too much light on the contradictions of an already faltering regime, ready to collapse with the French Revolution? Netia Jones’ new production retains the very essence of Beaumarchais’ play as she humorously yet mischievously explores human relationships in a universe that confuses reality and fiction to the point of asking, like the Count: “Are we playing in a comedy?” The Paris Opera Orchestra and Chorus A Paris Opera and Bel Air Media co-production, with the participation of France Télévisions, the support of the CNC and the Orange Foundation, patron of the Paris Opera's audiovisual broadcasts. Prompted by Don Alfonso, a cynical old philosopher, two young idealists decide to put their lovers’ fidelity to the test. But love will teach them a bitter lesson: those who believe themselves phoenixes and goddesses will discover the desires of the flesh…In 1790, one year after the French Revolution, in what would be their final collaboration, Mozart and Da Ponte conduct a scientific investigation of love. The music of Così fan tutte is truly extraordinary – complex in its symmetry, jovial and yet infused with an almost sacred melancholia. An extraordinary score where each note seems intended to make us accept a loss – lost paradise, lost youth, or a lost loved-one – and portray a world where all is in a constant state of flux. This laboratory of eroticism could but inspire choreographer Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker, who excels in revealing a work’s innermost geometry on stage. With six singers doubled by six dancers, she depicts the desire which unites and separates human beings, like the interactions between atoms that, once broken, make new bonds possible With the Paris Opera Orchestra and ChorusesA Paris Opera, Telmondis and Mezzo co-production Associate producer Idéale Audience With the support of the Orange Foundation, sponsor of the audiovisual broadcastings at the Paris Opera and the help of the CNC (National Centre for Cinema and the Animated Image)Director: Louise Narboni © Opéra national de Paris - Telmondis - Mezzo - 2017Visuel : © Agathe Poupeney / OnP

What is this flame that compels Don Giovanni to seduce, subjugate and conquer women one after the other, with the fervour and cold indifference of a predator securing his prey; to pursue through his conquests some obscure and ever‑elusive objective? For his second collaboration with Da Ponte, Mozart was to brand the history of opera with a hot iron and forever haunt European culture. In this Libertine Punished, Kierkegaard invites us to hear “the whisperings of temptation, the whirlwind of seduction, the silence of the moment”. The Mozart-Da Ponte cycle continues with a Don Giovanni entrusted to director Ivo Van Hove, accustomed to examining the political meaning of works. Diggi, daggi, shurry, murry, horum, harum…: with this magical spell, young shepherd Bastien will have the power to win back the heart of his beloved shepherdess Bastienne. Mozart composed this short Singspiel at the age of 12. In a stage production by Mirabelle Ordinaire, the action is reframed in a modern funfair where fairgoers come at shooting ranges to shoot cardboard wolves. The fickle Bastien has become the machinist in charge of the stands's maintenance and the twelve musicians play in the bandstand. Performed in its French version, faithful to Mozart’s sensibility, the opera has been adapted to be easily understandable to every audience. From 6 years old.Visuel © Elena Bauer / OnP

In this piece specifically created for the Paris Opera Ballet in 1994, the choreographer Angelin Preljocaj finds a subtle balance between the classical genius of Mozart’s music and the modernity of his choreographic language. The perfectly chiselled sets evoke the elegance and refinement of a French‑style garden while the costumes draw inspiration from the Age of Enlightenment.Advancing to the caprices of an imaginary Carte du Tendre and guided by strange gardeners, the dancers awaken to love, from first encounters to seduction, from timidity to attraction, from resistance to the sweet appeal of abandon in sublimely soaring “pas de deux”.Even today, this timeless work continues to explore the codes of love and the way human feelings develop. The artists of the Academy are back on the Garnier’s stage for an exceptional concert gathering some rarely performed pieces by Joseph Bologne de Saint-George, better known as the Chevalier de Saint- George. An important figure of the court of Louis XVI, Saint-George taught music to Queen Marie-Antoinette (at least, when he wasn’t dueling against the Chevalier d’Eon as a champion fencer). A virtuoso violinist, he composed many Chamber music works and some opéras comique, working with authors such as Choderlos de Laclos.A potential Director of the Royal Academy of Music, his application was denied by a handful of artists who refused the idea of a man born a slave as their leader. Pas de deux and swordplay alternate against a backdrop of Mozart concertos.Sechs Tänze extends the Mozartian universe and caricatures it in a series of dances with a quirky sense of humour, while Gods and Dogs explores the borderline between normality and madness: when dogs become gods and vice versa.
