In 2021, Pierre Lacotte offered the dancers of the Ballet de l'Opéra his latest creation, Le Rouge et le Noir (The Red and the Black), based on Stendhal's masterpiece. Choreographer, ballet master and former Premier Danseur trained at the Paris Opera Ballet School, Pierre Lacotte has remounted several of the great romantic ballets in the Company's repertoire.For this piece adapted from the novel, he created the libretto, choreography, sets and costumes. Following the choreographer through the various stages of creation, the documentary traces the work of transmission and elaboration, from studio rehearsals with soloists and the Corps de Ballet, to set and costume design in the Paris Opera's workshops.Through this sumptuous dance fresco, Pierre Lacotte, who died in 2023, has offered a genuine tribute to the Paris Opera Ballet and to all those involved in the production.

What forms do their desires take? What do they draw on, and with what tools do they equip themselves, to deal with being far from their families? And how do they stay in contact with them? What memories do the teachers have of their own new school years, and what do they bear in mind when addressing their new pupils? A very interesting documentary, as seriously informed as it is charmingly entertaining. - Le Monde Famous for its ghost, the Garnier Opera of Paris is above all the product of a titanic building site and the symbol of the birth of a new era. From 1852 to 1870, eighteen years of flamboyance made Paris the capital of modernity.This 90-minute documentary aims to tell the story of the great Paris construction of the Garnier Opera House, which lasted 14 years (from 1861 to 1875). While plunging into the backstage, its wheels and its legends, it will explain the special place it occupied in what Nietzsche called the "civilization of opera", the golden age of the bourgeoisie based on the appearance and the spectacular, which was then put in place. By the admission of Charles Garnier, the Opera as a whole was to serve as stage for the new elite of the time. From the story of its construction and architectural details, we will open windows on historical, social, political and artistic themes that will be treated to the image by paintings, period photos, film clips, animations in 3D and historical evocations (fiction). We will also call on specialized speakers on these different themes. Interviewed in studio and in situ, they will guide us, step by step, in this building still alive and full of anecdotes. Throughout the story, we will also follow the myth of the ghost, invented from scratch by the novelist Gaston Leroux, and so well integrated into the monument that it remains today THE symbol and an important key to understanding. Finally, music and ballet will be present in this film, in the form of musical excerpts and lyrical performances. Public enemy no. 1 for the defenders of a certain operatic tradition, he is an unavoidable reference for the modernity of musical theatre.Gerard Mortier expresses himself through his choices. His approach: to push the "opera" genre to its limits. By making it "explode" (Mussbach, Neuenfels), or on the contrary, by giving it an extremely refined form (Chéreau, the Herrmanns).What should we retain, preserve and pass on from a work of art?
