“Manon is a beautiful sixteen-year-old girl who loves life and cannot resist fleeting pleasures. She is charming, but amoral.” This is how choreographer Kenneth MacMillan described the heroine of his ballet Manon, inspired by abbé Prévost’s famous novel. Premiered in 1974 at the Royal Opera House, this sweeping tragic fresco, which entered the Paris Opera’s repertoire in 1990, showcases the British choreographer’s psychological acuity, his mastery of narrative ballet and his innate sense of theatre. Nicholas Georgiadis’ sumptuous sets and costumes and the dancers’ purity of movement, highlight the contrast between Manon’s modest origins and the glittering world she longs for. Set to selected passages from music by Jules Massenet, the passion between Manon and Des Grieux unfolds with overwhelming intensity, from the small inn near Paris to the swamps of Louisiana.

Mayerling is the name of the hunting lodge in which the heir to the Austro-Hungarian Empire, Rudolf, was found dead in 1889. Why did the son of Emperor Franz Joseph and Elisabeth (the famous Sissi) commit suicide in the company of his mistress, the young Mary Vetsera? Kenneth MacMillan’s ballet inspired by this mystery‑shrouded historic event was first performed in London in 1978 and entered the Paris Opera’s repertoire in 2022. Plagued by addictions and suicidal thoughts, a tormented character buffeted by history, Rudolf provides an opportunity for the choreographer to develop themes dear to him. Set to feverish music by Franz Liszt, Mayerling unfolds an immensely theatrical neo-classical choreography. Grandiose scenes are interwoven with intimate scenes in sumptuous costumes whose autumnal hues reflect the decline of a world destined to disappear.

Rudolf: Heir to the Austrian crown Mary Vetsera: Daughter of Baroness Helena Vetsera, Rudolf’s lover Mary Larisch: Countess, Rudolf’s former lover and chaperone of Mary Vetsera Stephanie: Princess, Rudolf’s wife Franz Josef: Emperor of Austria, Rudolf’s father Elisabeth: Empress of Austria, Rudolf’s mother Mitzi Caspar: Rudolf’s mistress Bratfisch: Rudolf’s coachman and friend Bay Middleton: Colonel, Empress’s lover

Guided by a strange voice under the flickering light of a flush-fitting ceiling lamp, two men observe one another and then confront each other. This duo soon becomes a crowd, a swell, which comes alive to the rhythm of Chopin’s preludes. Crystal Pite’s second creation for the Paris Opera Ballet, Body and Soul serves up waves of words and gestures which form the material for a secret narrative. Through the movement of the dancers, the words of a woman never cease to manifest themselves, like a duet between body and soul. Exploring the theme of mourning and bereavement, the Canadian choreographer presents the conflicting urges and impulses that challenge the unity of each of us. In a mysterious twilight awash with sound effects, this dramatically powerful three-act ballet progresses, not without humour, towards an exuberant and stimulating finale.  Les Étoiles, les Premiers Danseurs et le Corps de Ballet de l’OpéraWith the participation of France Télévisions, the support of the ORANGE Foundation, patron of the Paris Opera's audiovisual broadcasts, and the Centre National du Cinéma et de l'image animée. First performed in 1992, La Bayadère recounts the ill-fated loves of the dancer Nikiya and the noble warrior Solor, promised to the redoubtable Gamzatti, in an imaginary India complete with elephants, tigers and palanquins.Rudolf Nureyev adapted the choreography by Marius Petipa – to music by Ludwig Minkus – restructuring it to include virtuosi variations and large‑scale ensemble movements. The celebrated Royaume des Ombres (Kingdom of Shadows) in Act III is considered to be one of the summits of choreographic art.Unfailingly popular at the Paris Opera, the spectacular richness of Ezio Frigerio’s decors and costumes by Franca Squarciapino make La Bayadère a flamboyant spectacle. In homage to Patrick Dupond, who passed away in 2021, the Paris Opera Ballet celebrates the artist who, throughout a dazzling and luminous career, embodied the face of the Company on every continent. Internationally renowned, trained at the Opera’s Ballet School, dancer Étoile in 1980, then Director of Dance at the Paris Opera from 1990 to 1995, Patrick Dupond danced and shone for the major choreographers of his time. Études is a virtuoso synthesis of classical technique: with this ballet, dear to his heart, and which he often programmed as the Company’s director, the Paris Opera pays tribute to this immense figure of dance.Béjart’s Le Chant du compagnon errant (Song of the Wandering Companion) is a moving “pas de deux” that Patrick Dupond danced with his great friend Jean‑Marie Didière as well as with Nureyev. Neumeier’s Vaslaw, a work constructed around Patrick Dupond, celebrates the memory of another great dancer, Nijinsky.  With the Paris Opera Étoiles, Premières Danseuses, Premiers Danseurs and Corps de BalletDirector: Isabelle Julien © Opéra national de Paris - Bel Air Media - 2023

Set to music by John Cage and Anton Webern, Stepping Stones pays tribute to the memory and heritage of dance. On stage, Egyptian cats are the guardians of tradition.Three new pieces by Kylián enter the Ballet's repertoire this season. Petite Mort poetically explores the double theme of death: the lesser one symbolising orgasm and the greater one that brings life to a close. Pas de deux and swordplay alternate against a backdrop of Mozart concertos.Sechs Tänze extends the Mozartian universe and caricatures it in a series of dances with a quirky sense of humour, while Gods and Dogs explores the borderline between normality and madness: when dogs become gods and vice versa. In a midnight blue light, the dancers perform in front of delicate strings that recall those of a Beethoven quartet. In the 1830s, during the period of the Restauration, Julien Sorel, an irresistible young 18-year‑old, experiences a meteoric rise. A protégé of the abbé Chélan, he gains access to the world of the aristocracy and finds himself at the very heart of the struggle for power. Le Rouge et le Noir (The Red and the Black) is the story of a tumultuous life in which love proves to be the most dangerous of passions. Madame de Rênal and Mathilde de La Mole lead the protagonist through the twists and intrigues of a 19th century in which desire, politics and religion form the backdrop for a brilliant character study. In sumptuous sets and costumes which he himself has conceived, Pierre Lacotte, who reconstituted La Sylphide, Paquita and Coppélia, now offers us an entirely new creation based on Stendhal’s novel of the same name, accompanied by a musical anthology from Jules Massenet. Numerous choreographers have delved into Shakespeare to find dramatic material for their ballets, beginning with Jean-Georges Noverre, an ardent defender of the “action ballet” and Marius Petipa, who was the first to use Mendelssohn’s stage music. George Balanchine, who also loved the score, would prove no exception. In 1962 he created his version of Shakespeare’s comedy for New York City Ballet. Faithful to the Bard’s vocabulary whilst adding a subtle touch of pantomime, he portrays a complex love story in two acts and six scenes.Theseus, Duke of Athens, and Hippolyta, queen of the Amazons, become caught up in a domestic quarrel between the king of the elves and the queen of the fairies which results in the intervention of the mischievous Puck and his magic potion along with a troupe of amateur actors. The denouement is celebrated in the form of a grand virtuoso entertainment. One of George Balanchine’s rare narrative ballets, A Midsummer Night’s Dream is entering the Paris Opera Ballet’s repertoire.
