As a tribute to Nicolas Joel, who passed away one year ago, the Paris Opera is releasing online the opera Akhmatova, staged and directed by Joel in 2011. For this worldwide premiere, dedicated to one of the most prominent Russian poets of the 20th century, the Opera commissioned Bruno Mantovani to compose the score and Christophe Ghristi to write the libretto. Their work focuses on the darkest moments of Anna Akhmatova’s life: Stalin’s regime and especially her son’s deportation.After 20 years at the direction of the Capitole de Toulouse, where he enriched the repertoire with many of his own productions, Nicolas Joel was named Director of the Paris Opera from 2009 to 2014. Varduhi Abrahamyan was born into a family of musicians and studied at the Yerevan Conservatory. She has appeared in numerous productions at the Paris Opera including L’Italiana in Algeri (Isabella), L’Incoronazione di Poppea (Ottone), Giulio Cesare (Cornelia), The Queen of Spades (Pauline), Rigoletto (Maddalena), Eugene Onegin (Olga), Falstaff (Mrs Quickly), Un ballo in maschera (Ulrica), the title role in Carmen, the world premiere production of Bruno Mantovani’s Akhmatova (Lydia Chukovskya) and La Forza del destino (Preziosilla). Her repertoire of roles also includes Malcolm (La Donna del lago) at the Theater an der Wien, the title role in Carmen in Toulon, Néris (Cherubini’s Médée) at the Théâtre des Champs‑Élysées, Arsace (Semiramide) at the Montpellier Opera, Nerestano (Bellini’s Zaira) at the Radio-France Festival in Montpellier, Pauline (The Queen of Spades) and Bersi (Andrea Chénier) at the Théâtre du Capitole in Toulouse. She also sang L’Amour sorcier at the Théâtre du Châtelet with Marc Minkowski conducting, Orfeo (Orfeo ed Euridice) in Versailles, Marseille and Saint-Etienne, Polinesso (Ariodante) at the Grand Théâtre in Geneva, and Bradamante (Alcina) in Zurich alongside Cecilia Bartoli. More recently she sang the roles of Ascanio (Benvenuto Cellini) at the Rome Opera, Dalila (Samson et Dalila) at the Palau de les Arts in Valencia (where she made her debut in 2015 in Norma and Nabucco), Carmen at Moscow’s Bolshoi Theatre, the Hamburg Staatsoper, Palermo’s Teatro Massimo and in Atlanta and Hong-Kong; Arsace at the Marseille Opera, the Tchaikovsky Concert Hall in Moscow and the Rossini Festival in Pesaro, Polinesso (Ariodante) in Toronto, La Donna del lago (Malcolm) at the Rossini Festival in Pesaro, Bradamante at the Théâtre des Champs-Élysées, Eugene Onegin at the Canadian Opera Company, and La Donna del lago in concert at the Marseille Opera. She also made her debut appearance at Barcelona’s Gran Teatre del Liceu in L’Italiana in Algeri and sang the role of Eboli in Don Carlo in Las Palmas. During the 2019-2020 season, she sang the role of Maffio Orsini (Lucrezia Borgia) at the Teatro Donizetti in Bergamo and the Sydney Opera. She also played Carmen at Munich’s Bayerische Staatsoper, Barcelona’s Gran Teatre del Liceu, Venice’s La Fenice, Turin’s Teatro Regio and the Zurich Opera, and Arsace at the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam. Varduhi Abrahamyan also performs in concert (Verdi’s Requiem, the Stabat Maters of Rossini, Dvořák and Pergolesi, Wagner’s Wesendonck Lieder) under the direction of Myung‑Whun Chung, Nicola Luisotti, Jesús Lopez‑Cobos, and Jakub Hruša.

Christophe Dumaux performs on the greatest international opera stages: Metropolitan Opera New York, Staatsoper Unter den Linden Berlin, Paris Opera, Théâtre des Champs-Élysées, Wiener Staatsoper, Theater an der Wien, Lyric Opera Chicago… He has sung under many conductors, including René Jacobs, William Christie, Emmanuelle Haïm, Gianluca Capuano, Giovanni Antonini, Harry Bicket, Andrea Marcon, Ivor Bolton, Philippe Jaroussky and Francesco Corti, and collaborated with stage directors such as David McVicar, Robert Carsen, Calisto Bieito, Barrie Kosky, David Alden and Richard Jones. Recent highlights include the roles of Ottone (Agrippine) at Hamburg Opera, Tolomeo (Giulio Cesare) at Teatro alla Scala, Milan, the title-role in Orlando at Theater an der Wien, Polinesso (Ariodante) at Wiener Staatsoper, Salzburg Festival, Bolshoi Theatre in Moscow, Athamas (Sémélé) at the Opernhaus Zürich. His repertoire also includes Vivaldi (Melindo in La verità in cimento at Opernhaus Zürich) or Cavalli (title-role in Il Giasone at Opera Antwerpen and Endimione in La Calisto at Teatro alla Scala). Christophe Dumaux also performs concerts and recently sang Handel’s Messiah with the Orchestre métropolitain de Montréal. In the 2022/23 season, he performs the title-roles of Il Giustino at the Staatsoper Unter den Linden, Berlin, and of Giulio Cesare at the Dutch National Opera.

A graduate of the Kiev National Academy of Music and a Franco-Ukrainian baritone, Volodymyr Kapshuk continued his training at the Atelier Lyrique de l'Opéra National de Paris and then at the Salzburg Festival's Young Singers Project.He has won several international prizes, including L'Art du XXIe siècle, the Prix Lyrique du Cercle Carpeaux and the Prix Lyrique de l'Association pour le Rayonnement de l'Opéra national de Paris. He performs in recital and opera in France and abroad (Italy, Spain, Austria, Germany, USA, China...).Roles in his repertoire include Eugène Onéguine, Prince Eletsky (La Dame de Pique), Malatesta (Don Pasquale), Testo (Le Combat de Tancrède et Clorinde), Orestes (Iphigénie en Tauride), Tarquinius (Le Viol de Lucrèce), Guglielmo (Cosi fan tutte) and the title role in Don Giovanni.More recently, he sang Don Carlos (Les Fiançailles au Couvent), conducted by Tugan Sokhiev at the Capitole de Toulouse, and made his debut at the Berlin Philharmonic with the title role in Sergei Rachmaninov's Aleko and Robert in Tchaikovsky's "Iolanta". At the Opéra national de Paris, Volodymyr Kapshuk sings in numerous productions and works closely with the Académie de l'Opéra de Paris, notably in the cycle of "Récitals récités" given at the Bastille Amphitheatre in 2022.

After completing her classical studies in History, Geography and Art History at the University of Nancy and obtaining her Masters with Honours, Sophie Claisse embraced her passion for singing and entered the Conservatoire national supérieur in Nancy in the voice class of Jacqueline Brumaire and the drama class of Christiane Stutzmann. She won two gold medals in 1984 and 1986. In 1989, she joined the chorus of the Nantes Opera where she was also asked to perform a number of solo roles, including Annina (La Traviata) and the Heavenly Voice (Mireille), etc. In 1995, she joined the Paris Opera Chorus. As such, she has participated in all the productions on the stages of the Opera Bastille and the Palais Garnier, under the direction of some of the greatest conductors in France and around the world, including Sir Georg Solti, Georges Prêtre, Seiji Ozawa, Kent Nagano, etc. She has regularly been cast in small cameo roles: The Ghost (Macbeth), a maidservant (Die Frau Ohne Schatten), a nun (Dialogues des carmélites), etc.In 2000, under the direction of James Levine, she performed the solo voice from Elgar’s Pomp and Circumstance for the live presentation of the cartoon Fantasia 2000 at the Théâtre des Champs-Élysées. A prizewinner at the Cesson-Sévigné operetta competition and a finalist at the UFAM competition in 1997, she also specialises in that repertoire, performing, among others, the roles of Aspasie (Christiné’s Phi-Phi) and Mi (The Land of Smiles).
