What can video contribute to choreography? Can the camera itself become choreographic, making dance more visceral? These are some of the questions underlying Jessica Wright and Morgann Runacre-Temple’s artistic research. In Empreintes, the two British choreographers make their Paris Opera debut with a creation exploring the links between video and dance, set to an original score by Mikael Karlsson, composer of Play. Spanish choreographer Marcos Morau is also sensitive to the arts’ interdisciplinary dimension, often using a language that combines movement and image. His new work, Étude, explores the relationship between darkness and light, the light that allows us to imagine and create, despite doubts and shadows.

Morgann Runacre-Temple trained at the Central School of Ballet and the London Contemporary Dance School. She was awarded the Dance East Rural Retreat Award for Future Dance Leaders during the 2016/2017 season.

The London-based choreographer now works across dance, theatre, film, and opera. Her works include Averno with Stuttgart Ballet, Hotel Birmingham at The Royal Ballet, Kingdom of Back with Northern Ballet, Romeo &amp; Juliet, Carmen, and Nutcracker with Ballet Ireland, Wolf at Graz Opera and Alberta Ballet, Coppélia and Tremble for Scottish Ballet, Give My Love to the Sunrise for English National Ballet, and Barbara for Ballet du Capitole.

As a choreographer for opera and theatre, Morgann Runacre-Temple has worked with directors such as Jaz Woodcock-Stewart (Civilisation), Sam Brown (The Barber of Seville at Welsh National Opera), and Jeff James (Persuasion at the Royal Exchange). She was also assistant choreographer to Annie B. Parsons for the musical Lazarus by Enda Walsh and David Bowie, directed by Ivo Van Hove.

Alongside Jessica Wright, Morgann Runacre-Temple directed Scottish Ballet’s first feature film, The Secret Theatre, which won Best Dance Film at the Critics' Circle National Dance Awards in 2021. Their collective, Jess &amp; Morgs, was nominated by the Critics’ Circle at the 2021 National Dance Awards for Outstanding Creative Contribution.

Their production of Coppélia for Scottish Ballet won Best Classical Choreography at the 2023 Critics’ Circle National Dance Awards, the 2023 UK Theatre Awards for Achievement in Dance, and was nominated for Best Dance Production at the 2023 Sky Arts South Bank Awards.

Jessica Wright trained at the Central School of Ballet before joining the D.A.N.C.E. company, directed by Wayne McGregor, William Forsythe, Frédéric Flamand, and Angelin Preljocaj. She danced with Company Wayne McGregor for eleven years, creating roles in works such as Entity, Dyad 1909, FAR, UNDANCE, Atomos, Autobiography, and Tree of Codes.

Jessica Wright is now a director, choreographer, and filmmaker. She co-directs and choreographs in collaboration with Morgann Runacre-Temple under the name Jess &amp; Morgs.Their productions have been presented on Channel 4, BBC iPlayer, TATE Liverpool, the Venice Biennale, the Edinburgh International Festival, and the Sadler’s Festival. Their reinterpretation of Coppélia for Scottish Ballet won the 2023 UK Theatre Award for Achievement in Dance, the Critics' Circle National Dance Award for Best Classical Choreography, and was nominated for the South Bank Sky Arts Award.

Jessica Wright continues to work closely with Wayne McGregor, staging works internationally for companies such as The Royal Ballet, the Hungarian National Ballet, and the Norwegian National Ballet. She has created new works for SWM at Jacob's Pillow, Trinity Laban, and Elmhurst Ballet School. In 2021, she curated a dance film program for the Biennale Danza in Venice.

Jess &amp; Morgs’ films include Tremble (Scottish Ballet), Curing Albrecht, Cinderella Games, and An Evening with Taglioni (English National Ballet). They directed Scottish Ballet’s first feature film, The Secret Theatre, which won Best Dance Film at the Critics' Circle National Dance Awards.They were nominated by the Critics’ Circle at the 2021 National Dance Awards for Outstanding Creative Contribution.

Born in Omagh, Northern Ireland, Annemarie Woods designs sets and costumes for theatre, opera, and ballet. In 2011, she won the Ring Award in Graz and the European Opera Prize alongside director Sam Brown.She has designed sets and costumes for Don Giovanni at the Lithuanian National Opera and in Bergen, Rigoletto at Welsh National Opera, Polifemo at the Strasbourg National Opera, Semele, Trouble in Tahiti, and A Quiet Place at the Royal Opera House in London, Il Trovatore in London and Zurich, The Marriage of Figaro in Munich, The Rape of Lucretia in London and at Snape Maltings, Billy Budd at the Finnish National Opera and the Norwegian National Opera, Eugene Onegin at Scottish Opera, and The Lighthouse at the Irish National Opera.Among her costume designs are Coriolanus at the National Theatre, The Excursions of Mr. Brouček in Berlin and Brno, Orfeo, Romeo and Juliet, Girl with a Pearl Earring, and Sweeney Todd in Zurich, La Gioconda in Salzburg, Aida in London, Coppélia with Scottish Ballet, Don Quixote with the Royal Danish Ballet, Pagliacci / Cavalleria Rusticana in Amsterdam, Madame Butterfly in Montpellier, A Midsummer Night’s Dream in Berlin, La Traviata in Berlin, and Pity at the Royal Court Theatre.Debut at the Paris National Opera.

Creation

Born in 1982 in Valencia, Marcos Morau trained in photography, movement/dance, and theater between Valencia, Barcelona, and New York.

Since 2004, he has directed the dance company La Veronal, which has presented its productions in theaters and festivals across more than thirty countries, including the Théâtre National de Chaillot in Paris, the Venice Biennale, the Avignon Festival, Tanz Im August in Berlin, Festival RomaEuropa, SIDance Festival in Seoul, Sadler's Wells in London, and Danse Danse Montréal, among others.

In 2013, he was awarded the Spanish National Dance Award by the Spanish Ministry of Culture.

In addition to his ongoing work with La Veronal, Marcos Morau is a guest artist in several companies and theaters worldwide, where he develops new creations that blend performing arts and dance. His collaborations include Nederlands Dans Theater, Ballet de l'Opéra de Lyon, Les Grands Ballets Canadiens, the Royal Danish Ballet, and the Royal Ballet of Flanders, among others.

Since 2023, Marcos Morau has been an associate artist at Staatsballet Berlin, a company linked to the Deutsche Oper, Komische Oper, and Staatsoper Unter den Linden.

Named Chevalier de l'Ordre des Arts et des Lettres in 2023 by the French Ministry of Culture, he was also recognized as the Best Choreographer of the Year 2023 by the German magazine Tanz.
