Turandot

In Peking, a princess renowned for her beauty submits her suitors to three riddles. The prince who manages to solve them will win her hand and the throne. Alas, so far, all have failed and suffered the implacable punishment: death. Will young Calaf succeed?Inspired by Carlo Gozzi's fable, itself drawing on several sources including the Thousand and One Nights, Puccini's last opera revives the oriental atmosphere already present in Madama Butterfly.But in 1924, the year in which the composer died leaving his score unfinished, his writing had grown in modernity, without losing any of its melodic inspiration, as illustrated by the famous aria "Nessun dorma".The references to Asia could not fail to appeal to Robert Wilson, whose aesthetic draws on Japanese Noh theatre. His sparse staging, interspersed with touches of commedia dell'arte, offers striking and hypnotic images. Giacomo Puccini

Giacomo Puccini was born in 1858 in Lucca, Italy, to a family of organists (his father was a notorious theoretician and music teacher). A performance of Verdi's Aida, which he saw in Pisa in 1876, convinced him that his vocation was to become a composer. He studied at the Milan Conservatory with, among others, Amilcare Ponchielli. On Ponchielli's advice, he took part in a composition competition launched by the Sonzogno publishing house in 1883 for a one-act opera. Although he did not win the prize his piece, Le Villi, was staged in 1884 in Milan with some success. The music publisher Ricordi then commissioned him a second opera, Edgar. His third opera, Manon Lescaut, brought him lasting fame and marked the beginning of a fruitful collaboration with the librettists Luigi Illica and Giuseppe Giacosa. Together, they wrote Puccini's three greatest masterpieces: La Bohème (1896), Tosca (1900) and Madama Butterfly (1904). In 1910, the premiere of La Fanciulla del West took place at the Metropolitan Opera in New York. Puccini then composed a lighter piece, La Rondine, performed without much success at the Monte-Carlo Opera. After that, Puccini slowed down his compositional work. A car accident left him lame for the rest of his life and it was not until 1918 that The Triptych (Il Tabarro, Suor Angelica and Gianni Schicchi) premiered at the Metropolitan Opera. He died in Brussels in 1924 of throat cancer. His last opera, Turandot, remained unfinished. The last two scenes were completed by Franco Alfano. However, when Toscanini premiered Turandot at La Scala in Milan on 25 April 1926, he hold his baton to mark the point Puccini had reached before dying and turned to the audience: “Here the master laid down his pen. He stopped there when he died”. Puccini also wrote a number of religious works (Salve regina, Messa di Gloria).

Iréne Theorin graduated from the Music Academy and Royal Opera School of Copenhagen, and is performing on the greatest international opera stages.Last season, she was Brünnhilde (Die Walküre and Götterdämmerung) at the Bayreuth Festival, Brünnhilde (Die Walküre) in Stockholm, and she made a double appearance as Ortrud (Lohengrin) at the Deutsche Oper in Berlin and the Berlin Staatsoper unter den Linden.Other recent engagements include the complete Ring cycle at the Berlin Staatsoper unter den Linden, the title-role in Turandot at the Gran Teatre del Liceu in Barcelona, Teatro Real in Madrid and New National Theatre Tokyo, the title-role in Elektra at the Palau de les Arts Reina Sofía in Valencia, Brünnhilde (Die Walküre) at the Royal Swedish Opera, Ortrud at the Flemish Opera, the title-role in La Gioconda at the Gran Teatre del Liceu in Barcelona.In the 2022/23 season, she made her debut at the Baden-Baden Festival as the Dyer’s wife (Die Frau ohne Schatten) and returned at the Staatsoper Unter den Linden in Berlin as Kostelnicka (Jenůfa). She joined Lise Davidsen and Waltraud Meier at the Gran Teatre del Liceu, Barcelona, for the Institution’s 175th anniversary concert, where she also sang the role of Judith in Bluebeard’s Castle.On the concert platform, Iréne Theorin has recently performed a recital at the Gran Teatre del Liceu in Barcelona and the Los Angeles Victoria Foundation in Barcelona. Her DVD recordings include Elektra at the Salzburg Festival and Götterdämmerung at Teatro alla Scala in Milan, Tristan und Isolde filmed in Bayreuth and the Ring in Copenhagen.In March 2015, she was elected Best Singer of the Year in Spain for her performance of Brünnhilde in Die Walküre in Barcelona in 2014, and she was made Knight of the Order of the Dannebrog by Queen Margrethe II of Denmark.

Brian Jagde was born in New York and is a graduate of the San Francisco’s Adler Fellowship and Merola programs. In 2012, he received Second prize together with the Birgit Nilsson Prize at Plácido Domingo’s Operalia Competition. He performed the roles of Don José (Carmen) in San Francisco, at the Deutsche Oper in Berlin and the Limoges Opera, Mario Cavaradossi (Tosca) in Santa Fe and Berlin, Rodolfo (La Bohème) in Mexico, and Count Elemer (Arabella) at the Metropolitan Opera in New York. During the 2021/2022 season, he appeared as Des Grieux (Manon Lescaut) at the Vienna and Hamburg State Operas, Calaf at the Bayerische Staatsoper in Munich, Maurizio at the Vienna State Opera, Don José at the Verona Arena, Mario Cavaradossi and Pinkerton at the Metropolitan Opera in New York and the Deutsche Oper in Berlin.

Born in Albania, Ermonela Jaho studied singing at the Tirana Conservatoire and at the National Academy of St Cecilia, Rome. She lives in New York. Her repertoire ranges from the Baroque to the Verismo era and the Bel Canto. She performs on the leading international stages and is renown for her performances of Violetta Valery (La Traviata), Madama Butterfly, Suor Angelica (Il Trittico) and Adriana Lecouvreur.For the 2023/24 season, she appears in La Rondine at the Zurich Opera, The Human Voice at the Teatro Real Madrid, Suor Angelica at the Bayerische Staatsoper in Munich, and in concerts for operatic galas in Athens, Barcelona, Valencia, Nice, Oviedo, London and the Wigmore Hall with Opera Rara.In 2023, she was nominated “Artist of the Year” at the International Classical Music Awards (ICMA), and her recording of Turandot, released by Warner Classics / Erato, has been selected for the Best Opera Recording by the Gramophone magazine. She also won the 2021 ICMA vocal music prize with her album “Anima Rara”. Finnish bass, Mika Kares, studied at the Sibelius Academy in Helsinki and was a member of the Karlsruhe Badisches Staatstheater from 2005 to 2010. Polish tenor Maciej Kwaśnikowski began his vocal studies with Robert Nakoneczny in 2014. In 2015, he entered the Academy of the National Opera in Warsaw, where he worked with Izabela Kłosińska, Eytan Pessen and Matthias Rexroth. In 2017, he graduated in physics engineering from Poznań University of Technology, sang the role of Florville in Il Signor Bruschino with the Orchestre national d'Île-de-France, entered the Académie de l'Opéra national de Paris, was part of the Salzburg Festival's Young Singers Project and the Académie du Festival d'Aix-en-Provence. At the Académie de l'Opéra national de Paris, he plays Alfred in La Chauve-souris and Jeune Homme in La Ronde. He received the Cercle Carpeaux Lyric Prize 2018 and the AROP Lyric Prize 2019. He has performed the solo part in oratorios by Bach, Handel, Mozart, and notably Schubert's Mass in E-flat major with the Wiener Philharmoniker at the Salzburg Festival (2018) and with the Symphonieorchester des Bayerischen Rundfunks in Munich (2019). In 2019, he joins the Lindemann Program at New York's Metropolitan Opera, where his debuts and engagements are cancelled following Covid-19 until the end of the 2021 season. In 2022, he makes his debut as Ferrando (Così fan tutte) at the Opéra de Dijon and returns to the Salzburg Festival to perform Schubert's Mass in E-flat major with Camerata Salzburg under Franz Welser-Most. Next season, he will be Tamino (The Magic Flute) in Warsaw and Tours, as well as Tybalt (Romeo and Juliet) in Dresden. Maciej Kwaśnikowski has been studying with tenor Neil Shicoff since 2016. He has also sung Tamino and Count Almaviva in touring productions of The Magic Flute and The Barber of Seville. In 2016, he created the role of Fish Lamb in Cloudstreet presented by State Opera South Australia. He has sung the Male Chorus in Victorian Opera's The Rape of Lucretia, Britten's Canticles and Stefan Cassomenos' Art of Thought for the Melbourne Recital Centre and Haydn's Creation for the Sydney Philharmonic.He was also part of the original cast of Deborah Cheetham's opera Pecan Summer. More recently, he sang Michael Driscoll in Whiteley, as well as Tony in West Side Story for Opera Australia and Tom in Christina's World for State Opera South Australia. In 2022, he sang Tsarevich Gvidon (The Golden Cockerel) and Harry (Voss) in Adelaide, Handel's Messiah in Sydney, Melbourne and Adelaide, Jaquino (Fidelio) with the Sydney Symphony Orchestra, and returned to Opera Australia as Count Almaviva.He recently won the Green Room Award for his portrayal of David in The Mastersingers of Nuremberg at Opera Australia, and was nominated for the Helpmann Award for the same role. In 2023, he appeared in Mozart's Mass in C minor with the Sydney Symphony Orchestra and as Ralph Rackstraw in HMS Pinafore for State Opera South Australia's inaugural Gilbert &amp; Sullivan Festival. In 2024, he is Laertes in Brett Dean's Hamlet at Opera Australia. Nicholas Jones is the recipient of the Dame Heather Begg Memorial Award. He also organised regular working sessions in singing and human beat box with people suffering from mental illness in France and India. Hyun-Jong Roh studied music at Hansei University, South Korea, before studying singing at the Parma Conservatory with Giuliano Ciannella and Lelio Capilupi. In France, he studied at the Boulogne-Billancourt Conservatoire with Liliane Mazeron, where he unanimously obtained the First Prize in Singing. Since 2002 he has won many international singing competitions: Minerbio, Umberto Sacchetti, Mantua, Rhodesne, Riccardo Zandonai, Marmande... Hyun-Jong Roh has also performed numerous recitals in Korea, France and Italy.



On the concert platform, he has been a solo tenor in Franz Liszt’s Gaudeamus Igitur (cathedral of Parma) and has been invited to perform as a solo tenor in the cathedral of Notre-Dame de Paris for Mystère de la conversion de Paul Claudel by composer François Narboni. On the operatic stage, Hyun-Jong Roh has portrayed Giuseppe in La Traviata at Seoul Opera, the Duke of Mantua in Rigoletto and Rodolphe in La Bohème in Parma, Don Ramiro in La Cenerentola at the Île‑de‑France Festival.

Membre of the Paris Opera ChorusBorn in Poland, Isabelle Wnorowska-Pluchard studied at the Frederic Chopin Academy of Music in Warsaw from 1994 to 2000. During her final year of singing studies, she was invited to perform in Poland and Germany. She sang the role of Dorabella (Così fan tutte) at the Grand Theatre in Warsaw, and the Second Lady (The Magic Flute) on tour in Germany with the Trawinska-Moroz Company. She took part in many masterclasses with Christian Elssner, Krystyna Szostek-Radkowa and Sylvia Geszty, and performed recitals on the Polish operatic stages of Warsaw, Cracow and Gdansk.In 2001, she joined the Paris Opera Chorus and worked with Jorge Chaminé, Christiane Patard and Raphaël Sikorski. A laureate of CIMA (Concerti in Monte Argentario), she has taken part in several concerts at the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation, CIMA (Tuscany) and in a recording of Tchaikovsky melodies and Bizet arias. A finalist in the Young Artist Competition in Europe, she has given numerous song recitals in France, Italy, Poland and Germany. Marco Armiliato is a regular guest at the Metropolitan Opera New York (where he has already conducted more than 500 performances) and the Vienna Staatsoper, which recently appointed him Ehrenmitglied (honorary member). He has recorded with many music labels and won a Grammy Award for the album “Verismo” with Renée Fleming, Jonas Kaufmann and the Orchestra Sinfonica e Coro Sinfonico di Milano Giuseppe Verdi, as well as a Diapason d'Or for his album “Romantic Arias” with Jonas Kaufmann.He made his Vienna Staatsoper debut in Andrea Chénier in 1995, and then his Metropolitan New York in La Bohème in 1998, which was the start of her career. He has since been performing regularly on the leading international opera stages, including the Teatro alla Scala Milan, the Verona Arena, Royal Opera House Covent Garden, Paris Opera, Opernhaus Zürich, Salzburg Festival, the Chicago Opera, Teatro di San Carlo in Naples, Bayerische Staatsoper Munich and Semperoper Dresden.Since the beginning of her career, Marco Armiliato has been working with artists such as Mirella Freni, Renata Scotto, Luciano Pavarotti, Plácido Domingo, and more recently Anna Netrebko, Jonas Kaufmann and Angela Gheorghiu. In 2022 he was nominated music director of the 99th Opera Festival for the Verona Arena, where he conducted Carmen, Aida, La Traviata and Turandot. A graduate of the Taiwan Teacher Training College (Music Department), Ching-Lien Wu continued her studies at the Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique in Lyon, where she was awarded the First Prize in Choral Conducting in 1987. She attended courses and workshops in orchestral conducting with JeanSébastien Béreau, Helmut Rilling, Michael Gielen and Pierre Boulez. 
In 1989, she was appointed Chorus Master at the Nantes Opera and in 1990, Assistant Chorus Master at the Théâtre du Capitole in Toulouse. From 1991 to 2001, Ching-Lien Wu served as Chorus Master at the Opéra National du Rhin in Strasbourg. The work she accomplished there was acclaimed by French and international critics. During this period, she was guest Chorus Master at the operas of Montpellier, Rouen and Shanghai as well as at Radio France for various operatic works and oratorios. In 1996, she was assistant to Norbert Balatsch at the Bayreuth Festival.
From 2001 to 2014, Ching-Lien Wu was Chorus Master of the Grand Théâtre de Genève. In September 2014, she was appointed Chorus Master of the Dutch National Opera in Amsterdam. In 2016, the German magazine Opernwelt awarded the Dutch National Opera Chorus under the direction of Ching-Lien Wu the best Chorus of the Year label. She has also conducted numerous concerts with her own choir «Le Motet de Genève» with the Suisse Romande Orchestra, the Geneva Chamber Orchestra and the Orchestratus Genevensis. She was at the helm
of this vocal ensemble from 2002 to 2012.
Since 1996, she has been invited to give master classes in choral conducting at the CNSM in Lyon. In her native country, she has been responsible for musical studies for several opera productions, including The Barber of Seville, an opera she also staged in Taipei. Ching-Lien Wu was appointed Chorus Master of the Paris Opera in February 2021 and took up her post on 26 April of the same year.

Robert Wilson, born in Waco, Texas was recognized in the 1960s as one of the leading figures of Manhattan’s avant-garde. In collaboration with the collective he founded, the Byrd Hoffman School of Byrds, he developed ground-breaking works such as Deafman Glance (1970), The Life and Times of Joseph Stalin (1973), and A Letter for Queen Victoria (1974-1975). In 1976, his Einstein on the Beach, set to a score by Philip Glass, would turn conventional perceptions of opera upside down. Robert Wilson produces both original and traditional repertoire works all over the world. His stage productions incorporate a wide variety of artistic media (including dance, movement, lights, sculpture, music, and texts). He has collaborated with numerous high-profile writers and musicians including Heiner Müller, Tom Waits, Susan Sontag, Laurie Anderson, William Burroughs, Lou Reed and Jessye Norman. He has also left his mark on repertoire classics such as Samuel Beckett’s Krapp’s Last Tape (Spoleto, 2009; Holland Festival, 2015), Madame Butterfly (Paris Opera, 1993), Pelléas et Mélisande (Salzburg Festival, 1997), Brecht and Weill’s Threepenny Opera (Berliner Ensemble, 2007; Théâtre de la Ville, 2009), Jean de la Fontaine’s Fables (Comédie-Française 2004), Homer’s Odyssey (Athens, 2009), Goethe’s Faust (Berliner Ensemble, 2015), La Traviata (Landestheater Linz, 2015), and L’Incoronazione di Poppea (Milan’s La Scala, 2015). More recently, he directed Il Trovatore at the Teatro Regio in Parma, Turandot at the Teatro Real in Madrid, and Otello at the Baden-Baden Festival. The work of Robert Wilson is also firmly anchored in the fine arts. His sketches, paintings and sculptures have been exhibited all over the world. He is the founder and the artistic director of the Watermill Center, a multidisciplinary experimental art laboratory dedicated to collective creation which brings together New York’s leading professionals and young artists. His work has been honoured with an array of prestigious awards including a Pulitzer Prize, a Premio Ubu, an Olivier Award, and a Golden Lion from the Venice Biennale. He was elected to the American Academy of Arts and Letters, as well as the German Academy of the Arts. France bestowed him with the title of Commander of the Order of Arts and Letters (2003) and Officer of the Legion of Honour (2014). He was also awarded the Officer’s Cross of the Order of Merit by the Government of the Federal Republic of Germany.

Nicola Panzer studied opera stage direction at the Hochschule für Musik und Theater Hamburg with Götz Friedrich. While completing her studies, she became stage director assistant at the Hamburg Staatsoper where she is still regularly working as guest director.She has collaborated with many leading international institutions, including the Los Angeles Opera, Houston Grand Opera, Opera Ballet Vlaanderen, Royal Opera House Covent Garden, Théâtre du Châtelet, Théâtre du Capitole de Toulouse, and opera houses of Montpellier, Barcelona, Madrid, Moscow, Tokyo, Tel Aviv and São Paulo. She also works with the Festival dei Due Mondi in Spoleto, and the Salzburg and Bayreuth Festivals.Since 1998, she has been working as a freelance opera director. She has staged Stockhausen’s Aus den sieben Tagen, a series of five performances for a young audience at the Hamburg Staatsoper, Hänsel und Gretel at the Dortmund Konzerthaus, Riders to the Sea and Il Seraglio in Frankfurt, The Bartered Bride at the Landestheater, Nabucco at the Immling Opera Festival, Les Mamelles de Tirésias in Leipzig, Le Nozze di Figaro, The Barber of Seville and The Magic Flute for the Daejeon Festival (South Korea).Her collaboration with Robert Wilson started with Cosmopolitan Greetings (1988), a multimedia jazz opera to a score by George Gruntz and Rolf Liebermann and lyrics by Allen Ginsberg, followed by Parsifal in 1991 in Hamburg and, more recently, LUTHER-dancing with the gods in Berlin, Il Trovatore in Parma, Handel’s Messiah in Salzburg, at the Théâtre des Champs-Élysées and Grand Théâtre de Genève, as well as Otello in Athens.At the Paris Opera: Turandot, 2021

Stéphanie Engeln lives in New York. She studied interior and general design in Germany.Since 1985, she has been working on many scenic designs for the opera and theatre. She started to collaborate with Robert Wilson in 1989, with Shakespeare’s King Lear at the Frankfurt Schauspielhaus and has since created the designs for his productions of Madama Butterfly, Parsifal, La Traviata, Il Trovatore and, more recently, Handel’s Messiah in Mozart's version.Over more than 35 years, her career has been marked by many projects. In parallel to opera and theatre, her work includes exhibitions and installations in museums, architectural projects, interior, graphic and furniture designing.

John Torres is one of the first lighting designers to be working both for the dance, theatre, the music and the fashion worlds. Her collaboration with Robert Wilson includes Edda at the Oslo Norwegian Theater, Cheek to cheek with Tonny Benett and Lady Gaga.In the world of opera, he worked on various productions like Handel’s Messiah in Salzburg, Intelligence at the Houston Grand Opera, Tristan et Isolde at the Santa Fe Opera, or the recital Eden, by American mezzo-soprano Joyce DiDonato.For the theatre, he designed the lighting of Twelfth Night and A Bright Room Called Day for the Public Theater in New York, The Black Clown at the American Repertory Theater, Only an Octave Apart and Hamlet at St Ann’s Warehouse and Help: A New Play by Claudia Rankine at Shed.His music portfolio includes collaborations with Solange Knowles and Florence and the Machine and his dance work includes collaborations with Lucinda Childs for Available Light at the Théâtre de la Ville in Paris and with Bobbi Jene Smith for Lost Mountain and Broken Theatre at the MaMa.For the fashion industry, he works with Vogue World in New York, Bottega Veneta in Detroit and la Gucci Love Parade in Los Angeles. Jacques Reynaud studied fashion design in New York, where he lives and works. He has been noticed for his artistic projects for the theatre.He made his professional debut with director Luca Ronconi, for whom he created the costumes for Peer Gynt. Since the middle of the 1990s, he has been working with Robert Wilson. Their collaboration gave birth to the costumes for Ozeanflug, a play performed in 1998 at the Berliner Ensemble, The Days Before and POEtry in Hamburg, or Doctor Caligari in Berlin.In 2003, he designed the costumes for Leonce and Lena, staged by Robert Wilson to an original score by Herbert Grönemeyer. They pursued their collaboration in 2005 with William Shakespeare’s A Winter’s Tale, staged at the Berliner Ensemble. In 2017, he worked with Martin Zehetgruber for Michael Walter’s The Birthday Party at the Salzburg Festival. In 2019, he designed the costumes for The Jungle Book at the Düsseldorf Schauspielhaus.He recently created the costumes for Robert Wilson’s productions of Otello in Baden-Baden and Handel’s Messiah in Salzburg.

Born in Rostock, Germany, Manu Halligan studied artistic makeup.Familiar with the work of Robert Wilson, she began to collaborate with him on productions like Shakespear’s Sonnets and Peter Pan in Berlin. She was the makeup artist for his revival of Einstein on the Beach in Kwangju in 2015. She also worked on Robert Wilson’s productions of Pushkin’s Fairy Tales at the Theatre of Nations in Moscow (2015), Edda at the Oslo Norwegian Theater (2017), The Sandman at the Düsseldorf Schauspielhaus (2017), The Jungle Book at the Grand Théâtre de la Ville in Luxembourg and Düsseldorf Schauspielhaus (2019).More recently, she worked on Handel’s Messiah, performed in 2020 in Salzburg. Manu Halligan is also a makeup artist in shows performed by Robert Wilson himself. Her portfolio also includes American movies like The Hunger Games, Point Break and A Cure for Wellness, and she also works on series like The Queen’s Gambit and The Empress, or for ceremonies with photographers like Jim Rakete. Tomek Jeziorski was born in 1986 in Warsaw. He studied at the Polish Cultural Institute in Warsaw and completed his training with a filmmaker and screenwriter diploma at the Łodź National Film School. As a filmmaker, his movies have been screened in many international film festivals, including those of Locarno, Vancouver, Madrid, St-Petersburg, Tampere, Vienna or Sibiu.In 2009, he began to collaborate with stage director Robert Wilson, for whom he made the videos of his shows. He also works with various artists including Laurent Chetouane, Tilman Hecker, Karoline Gruber and the singer Herbert Gronemeyer, for whom he made the videos for the tour of his album Dauernd Jetzt.In 2015, Tomek Jeziorski was a finalist in the Papayoung directors competition and an artist resident at the Watermill Center in New York. In 2021, he won an artistic grant from the Łodź district in the cinema category. José Enrique Macián is a Spanish-American author, translator, publisher and dramaturge. He graduated from Brown University (USA), where he studied comparative literature, theatre and art history. In 2008, he received a grant from the prestigious Fulbright programme. He was a close collaborator of Dimiter Gotscheff in Berlin, from 2008 to 2013, year of director’s death.From 2009 to 2019, he worked with Robert Wilson throughout Europe, on theatre and opera projects. He also published The Watermill Center: A Laboratory for Performance (2011), a book dedicated to the artistic centre founded by Robert Wilson.With composer Jóhann Jóhannsson, he co-wrote the script of Last and First Men (2020), a critically acclaimed feature film starring Tilda Swinton. The movie was later released on Blu-ray by Deutsche Grammophon.He published and translated exhibitions catalogues for several leading cultural institutions in Europe, including the Museum Albertina in Vienna, the Haus der Kunst in Munich, K20/K21 in Düsseldorf, Centre Pompidou in Paris and the Royal Academy of Arts in London.
